Relocation of Freshwater Mussels Prior to Bridge Replacement

Biodrawversity LLC surveyed and relocated freshwater mussels in the Farmington River prior to the replacement of the Route 4 Bridge in Farmington, Connecticut. The target was the eastern pondmussel (Ligumia nasuta), a special of special concern in Connecticut. During a two-day period in May 2008, surveyors searched for and removed the eastern pondmussel and other uncommon species from areas of the riverbed that might be directly or indirectly altered by construction activities. A total of 172 eastern pondmussel and 224 triangle floater were relocated to suitable habitat upstream. Five other species were found including the eastern lampmussel, eastern elliptio, creeper, alewife floater, and eastern floater. A portion of the eastern lampmussel and all other species except the eastern elliptio were also removed from the project area and placed in suitable habitat upstream or downstream. Relocation of these animals, along with construction best management practices implemented by the construction company, minimized adverse effects of bridge replacement on the local mussel population.
