Relocation of Yellow Lampmussels and Tidewater Muckets Prior to Dredging in the Lower Connecticut River
Biodrawversity LLC surveyed and relocated tidewater muckets and yellow lampmussels from an approximately 200x800 foot area of the Connecticut River prior to dredging of a fuel oil berthing slip and intake structure at NRG Middletown Power Station in Middletown, Connecticut. The SCUBA team systematically searched the area and collected all state-listed mussels. All animals were measured, photographed, and moved to similar habitat a safe distance from the dredging area. The discovery of yellow lampmussels, an endangered species in Connecticut previously known from an area more than 30 miles upstream, was unexpected and exciting from a conservation standpoint. Dredging proceeded as planned and on schedule, and the project allowed the State to gain a better understanding of one of its rarest species and avoid “take” associated with dredging.
