Research on Survey Techniques and Ecology of the Eastern Worm Snake in Massachusetts

Biodrawversity LLC is involved in a long-term study of the eastern worm snake (Carphophis amoenus) at three sites in Hampden County, Massachusetts. The eastern worm snake is listed as Threatened in Massachusetts, and the Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program hired us to gather ecological data on the species and help to develop an appropriate survey methodology. This is a very secretive, fossorial species that is rarely seen above ground. In 2008, cover objects were set up in multiple arrays and checked one to two times per week throughout the survey period. Four individuals were found during site visits. Due to probable low population densities, more frequent site visits or more cover materials were necessary to document presence in a shorter time frame or to obtain more rigorous data about behavioral patterns and abundance, and therefore the research project was extended for a second field season in 2009.
