Endangered Species Surveys and Ecology of the Shetucket River in the Scotland Hydroelectric Project in Connecticut

Biodrawversity LLC is leading freshwater mussel, wood turtle, riverine odonate (dragonflies and damselflies), and aquatic and riparian plant surveys in the Shetucket River in Scotland and Windham, Connecticut (Windham County) upstream and downstream of the Scotland Hydroelectric Project. Surveys are part of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) licensing process for the hydropower facility. Biodrawversity’s mussel biologists conducted SCUBA surveys in the 3.5-mile impoundment and a 0.5-mile reach downstream of the dam. Seven species were found, including two state-listed species never before documented in the Shetucket River (eastern pearlshell and brook floater). The seven species represents the highest diversity ever documented in any river reach in the Thames River watershed of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Endangered species surveys and the ecological characterization of the project area will continue through June 2009.
